Here are my final proposals for the Zac Helmore brief. I can't afford to print them so I will propose them on the presentation boards like this.

Included in the stationery is a pen, envelope, letterhead, compliment slip, business card and website template.

Show 'n' Tell feedback

Posted: Wednesday, 24 November 2010 | Posted by Adam Townend | Labels: , , , , , , 0 comments

This couldn't have really come at a worse time for me really, I am in the middle of getting everything sorted but I can see why this was a good way get a lot of different opinion quickly. After reading through the comments made it has become clear than I cannot please everyone (we would all be the same if that was the case). So some of the comments countered other comments and it's up to me to pick the bones out of what I really need to pay more attention too.

Looking around the room, I would say I had a fair ammount of work on show, but I wasn't too happy with my progress, particularly this week, due to other commitments like the dissertation. I now really have to push on and get as much done as I can, but to fully exploit it to the point in which I am happy. The Element brief was a prime example of full exploitation and I haven't really replicated that across the other briefs, however, it's all about how far the brief can be expanded before it seems contrived and very 'samey'.

There wasn't any glaring mistakes that people picked up on, and some of the briefs now are beyond the point of overhauling. I have a list of the comments that I deemed constructive and that will effect my decision making now and in the future.

Element brief
- Clear, concise boards, spend your time workin on other briefs!
- adequate amount
- Too many for hand in?
- understandable and thorough boards

Late Music brief
- Says mature but not 'late night music'
- lighter colours maybe?
- very sophisticated, definitely works
- so glad you changed the colour
- it's alright change to purple maybe?
- too much italic for me
- Yellow paper, texture paper?
- Stationery across yellow stock perhaps?

Zac brief
- Yes more images
- No get rid of these images and stick to single colour
- Yes use images with overlayed pattern
- Use real spirograph, 2 colours
- Nice Logos
- Don't understand why you used spirograph to represent his work... use spot varnish, more photographs

Arkitekt brief
- Like the deconstructed type
- Love square format
- can't read the red type
- prefer black and white versions
- covers are really working well.

These are all the comments I had, and as I said some cancel out others and some comments are a little unfounded.

Action plan
- I need to consider the colours on the arkitekt brief and refine covers
- Work with print finishes on the Zac Helmore brief
- Experiment with real spirograph perhaps?
- Review the red type on the Arkitekt
- MOVE ON from here asap (photography and boards for late music)
- start premiership brief and resolve arkitekt brief

Tutorial w/ Joe Gilmore

I had a quick tutorial with Joe regarding the briefs I am working on at the minute. I showed him what I had done for the Arkitekt magazine brief and explained the deliverables and he seemed to agree that I was approaching the brief in the right way. I showed him how I had developed my cover designs over the past week and he felt that my later versions were a little conventional and he actually preferred my original simple designs. I like both but I feel that I could take either direction and work with it.

He also saw the draft spreads I did and encouraged me to tighten up the leading and tracking to make it fit the modular grid I imposed better. It's all about getting the ratio of type size to leading correct, and I also need to make sure the pag information doesn't encroach on the content.

He also like the idea of the football publication brief and pointed me towards the guardian data blog which has all the guardian visual data graphics on there. This will undoubtedly help me define a design direction as the examples we looked at were pretty much what I had in mind for the brief.

Finally I showed him my work for the Zac Helmore brief, where I explained the concept and he thought it worked quite nicely apart from a few typographically errors.

Overall it was a chat worth having, and I'm glad for having his input on my work.

More Zac Helmore

I've developed the Zac Helmore stationery due to feedback from him and the crit. I've introduced his imagery where I deem necessary and I've also reworked the logo, we felt the spirograph pattern didn't sit too well on the outside. I've also added proposals for a CD and a portfolio book to see how the logo work across different media.

Zac Helmore development

Posted: Friday, 12 November 2010 | Posted by Adam Townend | Labels: , 0 comments

I decided to revisit the brief on the back of my meeting with Zac. He was a little taken back by the work I had done, but he was positive about it and said that self promo was something that had not entered his mind yet. He took the samples I had for him and we agreed to pick this up later in the year. However, I will finish off the brief based on his comments during the discussion and make some changes based on the feedback I had in the crit.

These mock ups show the development of the identity. I decided quickly on the concept of using spirograph patterns as an icon he can become known by. The concept and thinking behind it was that the results you get from spirograph are spontaneous and random similar to the results from an old film based camera. Spirograph, like photography requires a steady hand to achieve the best results. The intricate shapes of a spirograph pattern relate to the detail within Zac's photography. I also chose to use the avant garde typeface as it is a timeless typeface with vintage roots.

Zac Helmore Identity & Stationery

Posted: Thursday, 11 November 2010 | Posted by Adam Townend | Labels: , 0 comments

This is the Zac Helmore identity and stationery that I started and finished in around 3 hours. Zac is a photography student who is supplying images for the Arkitekt brief.

The critee's suggested I use some his work instead of the pattern on the back, which may or may not work depending on the image used. I like this for the time I spent on it. I wanted this to a one day brief which runs over two days when feedback is given by Zac. He doesn't know I have been designing all this so it might be that he already has stuff in mind.

Zac Helmore Brief

Started a new quick brief on the back of the Arkitekt brief. Zac is supplying me some imagery to use within the magazine brief so I have decided to throw together an identity which will work across all the stationery he needs to return the favour.

Progress Crit 2

Posted: Wednesday, 10 November 2010 | Posted by Adam Townend | Labels: , , , 0 comments

Another crit, and more problems arise. The general feeling was that everyone thought my work was strong, and that the context part of it linked to my practice, a little too much in one case.

The Late music brief was something that people picked up that could/should be amended to suit the audience. To be fair, I should have done some colour variations before now and find a colour that worked with my peers before creating the whole range. They felt the pink pantone didn't work, and asked me why I had used it, to which I had no answer. They suggested a 'dusty rose' red as being perhaps a better option than the pink and would engage the target audience more than the pink, after all the audience are mature in age and taste.

It isn't such a big problem, but the printing will involve my time and cost, which is a little annoying.

The Zac Helmore brief I started this morning received mixed reviews. Some felt that his work should be shown in his stationery and some felt that the photography type should have more impact as they would want to know his profession before hiring him.

Overall the feedback was good, and I'm happy that they pointed out the falls sooner rather than later. I can now get the Late Music brief done and out of the way and continue to develop the Helmore brief tomorrow.

Zac Helmore Initial ideas/ starting point

Here are some quick development design sheets I sketched out this morning. I wanted to create an icon or pattern using a spirograph technique. There are links between Zac's practice and spirograph. They both spontaneous, need a steady hand, and equipment to produce the end results.

I also got thinking about the kind of deliverables I would be required to produce for this brief.

Zac Helmore

I'm looking for a quick brief to show how quickly I can work, and what results I can achieve in a small space of time. Zac Helmore, a photography student, is currently working on his final major project, and when I advertised for a photographer to supply me with some architectural images Zac came forward and offered to collaborate with me.

In return for the images, I thought it would be a good idea to offer to create an identity for him and produce his stationery, included a CD and possibly a photobook/portfolio.

I'm due to meet him on Thursday to discuss the images he has, and I will present him with the first draft of identities I will do today. I'm unsure if he has thought about self promotion but he did say he didn't have an online presence.

This will hopefully be a quick 2 day brief, one day for the generation and first draft proposals and the next day to pitch and refine.
