I had a quick tutorial with Joe regarding the briefs I am working on at the minute. I showed him what I had done for the Arkitekt magazine brief and explained the deliverables and he seemed to agree that I was approaching the brief in the right way. I showed him how I had developed my cover designs over the past week and he felt that my later versions were a little conventional and he actually preferred my original simple designs. I like both but I feel that I could take either direction and work with it.
He also saw the draft spreads I did and encouraged me to tighten up the leading and tracking to make it fit the modular grid I imposed better. It's all about getting the ratio of type size to leading correct, and I also need to make sure the pag information doesn't encroach on the content.
He also like the idea of the football publication brief and pointed me towards the guardian data blog which has all the guardian visual data graphics on there. This will undoubtedly help me define a design direction as the examples we looked at were pretty much what I had in mind for the brief.
Finally I showed him my work for the Zac Helmore brief, where I explained the concept and he thought it worked quite nicely apart from a few typographically errors.
Overall it was a chat worth having, and I'm glad for having his input on my work.
