The Role of Typography in Graphic Design

Rationale (200 words)

- Idea driven designer with focus on typography and layout across a variety of media for both high-end commercial print and web.

- Predominantly design for print with an eye on new technologies.
- Client & Designer led

- Predominantly work for the publishing, information and promotional sectors (Posters, flyers, Book Covers, Magazine spreads, Reports, Corporate Identity).

- Clear and direct design approach with attention to detail.

- Work with existing typefaces and modify and create new typefaces to work with.


Statement of Intent (200 words)

- All the briefs I have chosen will help me to have a focussed enough design practice but will also allow me to experiment with type and layout, as this remains my focus as mentioned in my rationale.

- I will develop skills in Adobe InDesign in order to further my knowledge of working with type and grid systems.

- I will use the print workshops to develop skills in preparing artwork for print, and gain knowledge about specialist print finishes.

- I will make quick and informed decisions in order to produce appropriate design resolutions to the brief.


2.Brief 1 (Title)
Premier League Report

- A statistical report aimed at fans of the Premier League, and the leagues governing bodies and sponsors.

- To inform and educate existing and new fans through a statistical cross section of the Premier League season.

- Make facts and stats visually interesting to fans with a short attention span.

- Light hearted, clear and direct, emphasis on appropriate stock and finish

- Scope – Range of club specific reports (20), Distribution – web implementation, iPhone, poster series, stand.



3.Brief 2 (Title)
Element T-shirt line

- Range of 5 Typographic driven graphics for t-shirts inspired by skateboarding and music cultures.

- Aimed at skateboarders and appreciators of skateboard fashion.

- Emphasis on type treatments/ type manipulation and processes involved.

- Scope for development – tags, bags, prints, web implementation (web store)


4.Brief 3 (Title)
Showcase Cinema Rebrand

- Create a professional, assertive and friendly image for the Showcase Cinemas

- Promote/Persuade existing customers and film fans to choose Showcase over other competitors.

- Scope – Identity, Stationery, Style guide, Promotional – Insider pack, Gift Card, VIP Pack, Season ticket, Cinema times application.




5.Brief 4 (Title)
Modern Classics

- Range of 10 posters celebrating cult and classic movies of the 1990’s

- High impact, contemporary, and desirable finish

- Aimed at 16-24/ fans of the films / people who missed them the first time

- Typographic driven promotion posters

- Scope for development – DVD/Blu-Ray covers promo, DVD menu interface

General Comments

The briefs I have selected are different enough for me to create a varied but unique portfolio, but also develop the skills I need to inform my own design practice.
