Just as I suspected, everything was a little on the large side. With the body copy at 10pt the legibility was ok but the copy took up too much space. I photographed the layouts I printed to show what I mean and then I went back and started to reduce the type sizes to reflect what you would find in other magazines.
These seem to be working much better with the body copy reduced to 8pt on 11pt leading, which still aids comfortable readability.
The images with the white space seem to work on the layouts I have here. The full bleed images seem to overcrowd the pages to the point that they encroach on the meaningful content.
